When will Honda produce an electric vehicle?
It seems pretty clear that the automotive industry is finally planning to move on from powering its vehicles with gasoline. Over the last few years, our team of Meridian Honda product experts have been hearing the question, ‘When will Honda produce an electric vehicle,’ more and more. According to our manufacturing partner, the first high-volume Honda electric vehicle will be called “Prologue” and it is slated to be available for Meridian-area customers for the 2024 model year. Truth be told, we actually know very little about the coming Honda Prologue, but we do want share with our customers what has been shared with us. Will the Honda Prologue be an SUV?
“Our first volume Honda BEV will begin our transition to electrification and the name Honda Prologue signals the role it will play in leading to our zero-emission future. The Prologue will provide our customers with a battery-electric SUV with the excellent functionality and packaging they’ve come to expect from Honda.”Dave Gardner, executive vice president of American Honda
As the above quote from Honda EVP Gardner says, the Prologue will be some kind of SUV. Its exact dimensions and performance specs aren’t ready for public consumption quite yet. Several Meridian Honda product experts have some guesses, but we’re not authorized to share them with people just yet. The Honda Prologue will be powered by batteries from Ultium which itself represents a partnership between our manufacturing partner and another major automaker.
Honda, as a company, has never been shy about setting ambitious goals. The coming Prologue electric SUV will be the manufacturer’s first step in have 100 percent of vehicle sales in North American be electrified. Future Meridian Honda customers can be sure this effort is building on a strong foundation. The Prologue will be the first widely produced electric vehicle, but it won’t be the first electrified or hybrid vehicle it has produced. The EV Plus debuted in 1997 and was followed by the Honda Insight in 1999, the hydrogen-powered FCX in 2002 and the Clarity hybrid sedan in 2017.
As of right now, buyers can get a hybrid version of the automaker’s CR-V platform, which debuted in 2020.
