Plan for a rainy day — One of the most pervasive myths that are clinging to life in the automotive industry is that a rainy day means a better deal on a new vehicle. There is one major problem with this, just about everybody has the same idea. Some of the busiest days at any dealership around the world are going to be when the weather is lousy. However, there are some days when you will find a better deal than would normally be available.

Some of the best times to shave more than a few dollars off a new vehicle purchase would be when you know that a vehicle is about to be redesigned for the following model year and when an automaker is ready to cancel production of a model.

Hide your true intentions — For some reason, there are always a handful of customers each month who think they need to be cagey when dealing with the sales staff. It’s like they believe that if they tell us they want to take out a lease, they’ll end up getting snowed. Leasing is a great deal for qualified buyers that can save them money on the front-end of a transaction and it also benefits the dealership. As long as a customer meets the financial requirements, they will get the advertised leasing terms. These deals are meant to be as hassle-free as possible.

Take it or leave it — One of the most aggressive and baffling things that a few people do to get a deal is to show up with a metaphorical bag of money and declare this what they’re spending — end of story. There are a few big problems with this divisive approach. One, it can be hard to accurately account for the various taxes and fees that are applied at the time of sale. Also, what if there is an available discount that could be used, and someone has painted themselves in a corner unnecessarily.
